Dragon

The Japanese dragon is named ryū . Although it differs from other oriental dragons by a few physical features, its symbolism and attributions are similar to these.

Many shrines and altars in honour of the dragons can still be seen in many parts of the Far East. They are usually located near coasts and riverbanks, revealing the close association between oriental dragons and water. Itsukushima Temple Island in the Japanese Inland Sea has become a famous stopover for pilgrims who meditate and pray to the dragons there.
