The katori buta, also known as kayari buta, is a small, pig-shaped terracotta object mainly used in summer to repel mosquitoes in many hot and humid regions. The goal is to place inside a katori senkō, that is to say, a stick of incense in the shape of a green spiral, made from powder of Dalmatian pyrethrum, which is placed in vertically or horizontally using a wire.
In Japanese, the expression can be understood as follows: ka (蚊) means "mosquito", to (取) refers to the verb "to take" and buta (豚) refers to the word "pig" - literally "the pig that takes mosquitoes ”.
